Biography: French poet, novelist and storyteller, Pierre Lou\u00ffs \u2014 pseudonym of Pierre-F\u00e9lix Louis \u2014 was born in Ghent (Belgium) on December 10, 1870.<\/span><\/h2>\n

His father, Pierre-Philippe Louis (1812-1888), a lawyer in Dizy, near \u00c9pernay, was the grandson of Baron Louis, a high official of the Empire, then peer of France.\u00a0<\/span>From a first marriage, with a young lady Blanchin, he had a son, Georges, future ambassador to Saint-Petersburg (1847-1917).\u00a0His second wife, Claire-C\u00e9line Maldan, who died in 1879, bore him two sons: Paul, who died in 1884, and Pierre, whose education was entrusted to his half-brother, who was twenty-three years older.\u00a0<\/span>Pierre Lou\u00ffs’ mother is the granddaughter of Louise Junot, sister of the Duke of Abrant\u00e8s, and of Doctor Sabatier, Napoleon’s doctor and co-founder of the Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n

After having followed up to rhetoric the courses of the Alsatian School, Pierre Lou\u00ffs enters philosophy at the Janson-de-Sailly high school, where he has for classmates Maurice Legrand (future Franc-Nohain) and Marcel Drouin (future brother-in-law by\u00a0<\/span>Andr\u00e9 Gide<\/span><\/a>\u00a0).\u00a0<\/span>He became friends with Andr\u00e9 Gide, then a student at the Lyc\u00e9e Henri-IV.<\/p>\n

He covers school notebooks with stanzas laden with a very naive romanticism.\u00a0Then his originality begins to manifest itself after having met\u00a0Paul Val\u00e9ry<\/a>\u00a0in Palavas, at the celebrations of the sixth centenary of the University of Montpellier.\u00a0He did a lot for the beginnings of this other poet, who remained his dearest and most faithful friend.\u00a0La Conque<\/i>\u00a0, a luxury magazine, was largely founded for the pleasure and honor of printing the first poems of this one, alongside his own, which he grouped together two years later under the title of\u00a0Astart\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

In 1890, Lou\u00ffs was introduced to\u00a0St\u00e9phane Mallarm\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0, then to Jos\u00e9-Maria de Heredia.\u00a0His first verses of some value,\u00a0L’Effloraison<\/i>\u00a0, were published in\u00a0La Revue d’Aujourd’hui<\/i>\u00a0edited by Rodolphe Darzens.<\/p>\n

On his return from a trip to Bayreuth and a pilgrimage to the Grande-Chartreuse, Pierre Lou\u00ffs really got involved in the symbolist milieu, both Belgian and French, collaborated with La Wallonie founded by Albert Mockel, with La Revue blanche\u00a0,<\/i>\u00a0with\u00a0the<\/i>\u00a0Mercure\u00a0de France<\/i>\u00a0et au\u00a0Centaure<\/i>\u00a0, the fine publication of Henri Albert, who inserted his magnificent sonnets from the\u00a0Hamadryades<\/i>\u00a0alongside\u00a0La Soir\u00e9e avec M. Teste<\/i>\u00a0(1890-1896).<\/p>\n

From 1892, Lou\u00ffs began to write in prose, with a translation of the\u00a0Po\u00e9sies de M\u00e9l\u00e9agre<\/i>\u00a0, the lyrical stories of\u00a0L\u00e9da<\/i>\u00a0,\u00a0Ariane<\/i>\u00a0,\u00a0La Maison sur le Nil<\/i>\u00a0, and finally the extraordinary\u00a0Chansons de Bilitis<\/i>\u00a0, one of his masterpieces. work and one of the happiest specimens of prose poems ever conceived in the French language.<\/p>\n

During a stay in London in the company of\u00a0Oscar Wilde<\/a>\u00a0, whose\u00a0Salom\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0he corrected , written directly in French, he drew the first draft, in verse, of\u00a0Aphrodite<\/i>\u00a0, the novel which would consecrate his reputation, and whose first chapter , the following year, the subject of a brochure entitled\u00a0Chrysis ou la C\u00e9r\u00e9monie matinale<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0Completed at Lapras, by A.-Ferdinand H\u00e9rold,\u00a0Aphrodite<\/i>\u00a0first appeared in the\u00a0Mercure de France<\/i>\u00a0, under the title\u00a0L’Esclavage<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0Then Alfred Vallette agrees to publish it on his own account.\u00a0But a dithyrambic article in the\u00a0Journal<\/i>, signed by Fran\u00e7ois Copp\u00e9e (to whom Georges Louis, worried about his brother’s daring, reported it) suddenly made a fortune for this novel of “ancient manners”, frivolous and libidinous in appearance, and which in reality paints the torment , the irremediable drama of an adolescence spent in search of true love.\u00a0This love, Pierre Lou\u00ffs has been experiencing, for three years, the hitherto triumphant and hopeful experience.\u00a0This very high and long shared passion ended in 1898 with the stanzas of\u00a0L’Apog\u00e9e<\/i>\u00a0, later incorporated into the\u00a0Pervigilium Mortis<\/i>\u00a0and then into the posthumous novel of\u00a0Psyche<\/i>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

That same year 1898 saw the appearance of a second story,\u00a0La Femme et le Pantin<\/i>\u00a0, more powerful and more direct than\u00a0Aphrodite<\/i>\u00a0, but which only confirmed its pessimism: a new\u00a0Carmen<\/i>\u00a0, less bitter and devoid of dryness.\u00a0Should we attribute both to the unforeseen explosion of\u00a0Aphrodite<\/i>\u00a0and to the failure of the only love of her life the sudden sterility with which such a precocious creator was struck before his thirty-fifth year?\u00a0It is not that the few other works which succeeded one another from 1899 to 1906 were at all negligible: thus the savory or profound pages of the\u00a0Adventures of King Pausole<\/i>\u00a0, of\u00a0Byblis<\/i>\u00a0, of\u00a0L’Homme de Pourpre<\/i>\u00a0, ofSanguines<\/i>\u00a0and d’\u00a0Archipel<\/i>\u00a0, friends the fact is that from this last date, one of the most vast and fertile minds of his time manifests itself hardly except by works of erudition and exegesis, of which he does not brings to light only fragments, and through exchanges of correspondence with Georges Louis and a few friends who remained trustworthy and generous:\u00a0Paul Val\u00e9ry<\/a>\u00a0(who was then writing\u00a0La Jeune Parque<\/i>\u00a0), Andr\u00e9 Lebey, Gilbert de Voisins, Claude Debussy (who had once executed the act I of\u00a0Pell\u00e9as<\/i>\u00a0at home), Claude Farr\u00e8re, Fernand Gregh\u2026<\/p>\n

From 1914, Pierre Lou\u00ffs, separated from his wife Louise de Heredia, married in 1899, retired to the solitude of the hamlet of Boulainvilliers.\u00a0He lived there for ten years in meditation.\u00a0One night in November 1916, he found, in a drawer that had remained closed since 1899, a forgotten draft of the\u00a0Pervigilium Mortis<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0It was then that he finalized his great poem, at the same time as he composed\u00a0Islhi<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Po\u00e9tique<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0But soon his health, which had already suffered the onslaught of poor hygiene, insomnia and excessive reading, declined to paralysis and semi-blindness.<\/p>\n

Pierre Lou\u00ffs died in Paris on June 6, 1925, at the age of 54.<\/p>\n
