On Thursday, the 3rd of Sha\u2019ban in the 4th year after Hijra (Islamic calendar), a child was born into the noble household of Prophethood whose bravery and ultimate sacrifice guaranteed the survival of the Islamic faith. His mother was Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (S.A.), the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his father was Imam Ali (peace be upon him).<\/h2>\n

According to Boraq Hamim Art News Agency<\/em>, after the passing of his revered brother Imam Hasan (A.S.), Imam Hussain (A.S.) assumed the divine responsibility of Imamate as ordained by God and willed by his brother. He lived for nearly 10 years during the reign of Mu’awiyah and followed the same peaceful path as Imam Hasan. However, Mu’awiyah\u2019s rule prevented him from making any significant political moves.<\/p>\n

After nearly a decade, Mu’awiyah died, and the caliphate, now effectively a monarchy, was passed to his son Yazid. Unlike his politically cunning father, Yazid was a young man intoxicated by power, known for his immorality and hedonism. Upon assuming power, he ordered the governor of Medina to demand allegiance from Imam Hussain\u2014or send his head.<\/p>\n

When the governor approached Imam Hussain with this demand, the Imam asked for time and then secretly left Medina with his family, heading to Mecca. He sought sanctuary in the sacred precincts of the Kaaba, but after several months it became clear that Yazid would not back down, and the Imam\u2019s refusal to pledge allegiance would inevitably lead to his martyrdom.<\/p>\n

During this time, thousands of letters from Iraq reached Imam Hussain, inviting him to rise against the tyranny of the Umayyads and promising support. Despite knowing that his uprising would not achieve material success, Imam Hussain chose martyrdom over submission. He left Mecca and headed toward Kufa with his companions, but on the plains of Karbala, about 70 kilometers from Kufa, they were surrounded by Yazid’s army.<\/p>\n

Along the journey, he invited people to join his cause, while informing his companions of his inevitable martyrdom. He gave them the freedom to leave. On the day of Ashura, only a small number\u2014around 70 individuals\u2014remained with him, fully devoted and prepared to sacrifice their lives.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Imam Hussain and his followers were surrounded and denied access to water. Faced with the ultimatum of pledge or death, Imam Hussain chose resistance. A brutal battle followed in which the Imam, along with his sons, brothers, nephews, cousins, and companions, were martyred. Only his ill son, Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (A.S.), survived due to his severe illness.<\/p>\n

Following the massacre, Yazid\u2019s army looted the Imam’s belongings, captured his family, and paraded them along with the severed heads of the martyrs from Karbala to Kufa and then to Damascus.<\/p>\n

During this captivity, Imam Zain-ul-Abideen and Lady Zainab (S.A.) exposed the tyranny of the Umayyads through powerful sermons in Kufa and Damascus. Their eloquent words awakened the conscience of the people and unveiled the true nature of Yazid\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n

The Hussaini uprising, marked by the shedding of innocent blood and the captivity of noble women, stands as an unparalleled event in world history. Its spiritual depth and moral clarity have left a legacy unmatched by any other movement. One could argue that Islam owes its survival to this sacrifice; had it not occurred, the Umayyads might have erased the very name of Islam.<\/p>\n

This heart-wrenching event clearly distinguished the mission of the Prophet\u2019s family from the aims of the Umayyads. It became a beacon of truth, cultivating generations of believers who held Imam Ali\u2019s guardianship in their hearts and adopted loyalty to the Ahl al-Bayt as their identity. Over time, this grew into a massive global movement, and today, more than 100 million Muslims around the world identify as Shi’a.<\/p>\n

The tragic Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his followers occurred on the day of Ashura<\/strong>, the 10th of Muharram in 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE), during the Umayyad Caliphate under Yazid ibn Mu\u2019awiyah.<\/p>\n
