The beginning of Dariush Mehrjouyi’s artistic activity with music

As a teenager, he became interested in music and participated in Mr. Zandi’s music class for a short time. With his father, who knew Iranian music well, he started playing the dulcimer, and then he got acquainted with western classical music and started playing the piano and writing pieces for the piano.

In the same year, he took over the editorship of Pars Review in Los Angeles and returned to Iran after one year.

Dariush Mehrjouyi’s first film

In 1968, he made his first film called “Diamond 33”, which was a very expensive film. This film was released in Tehran on 5th of January 1968 and had average sales, and due to the high cost of production, it was considered a commercial failure and did not attract the attention of critics.

The movie “Cow” and the brilliance of Mehrjouyi

In 1968, in collaboration with Gholamhossein Saedi, he wrote and filmed the screenplay of “Cow” based on one of the short stories from Saedi’s “Azadaran Bil-e” series. This film won many awards in international festivals. “Cow” was a successful film both commercially and artistically and opened a new chapter in Iranian cinema. Since then, except for a few years break after the 1357 revolution and the subsequent events that led to his migration to France, Mehrjouyi was one of the prominent and prolific Iranian filmmakers.

“Tehran Tehran” movie

The movie “Tehran Tehran” is a two-episode work about Tehran, the capital of Iran. These two episodes were directed by two cinematographers from two different generations: Dariush Mehrjovi and Mehdi Karampour. This movie produced in 2008, which was previously called Tehran in search of beauty, was supposed to have three parts and the middle part was directed by Saifullah Dad, who died before the film started. “Tehran: Days of Acquaintance” is the first episode of the movie. In this episode, Dariush Mehrjoui narrates old Tehran. In this episode, Panthea Bahram, Gurban Najafi, Mehtaj Najomi, Gholamreza Nikkhah, Katayoun Amir Ebrahimi, Farida Sepah Mansour and young actors Niki Nasrian and Mehdi Talebzadeh play. “Tehran Tehran: The Last Wire” is the second episode directed by Karampour and is about a singer who is trying to give a concert. But during the process of obtaining the permit, problems arise for him and his group. Soroush Sehat, Tanaz Tabatabai, Rana Azadivar, Reza Yazdani also played a role in this episode. Ali Luqmani filmed this work and Karen Homayunfar composed the soundtrack.

The movie “Orange Man”

Also, after the adventures of “Century” in 2009, Mehrjoui made a film called “My Beloved Sky”, which was neither popular with critics nor fans of Atisheh Mehrjoui. The film never saw the color of the screen and found a fate like “Century” and after 4 years of production in 2014, it quietly came to the home network.

In 2013, Mehrjoui started making a movie called “Naranja Posh” starring Hamed Behdad and Leila Hatami, regardless of the lack of screening and reception of “My Beloved Sky”. A film in support of the environment, which was Mehrjouyi’s main concern at that time. Orange Posh, which had its supporters and detractors and its director’s name was still in the headlines, was not very successful at the box office, and despite attracting only 327,000 viewers, it took the sixth place in the list of the most popular of the year. In the year when the third film of the “Little Red Riding Hood” trilogy titled “Red Riding Hood and Baby Nene” was the most popular movie of the year with only about one million and five hundred thousand viewers, and the audience did not welcome the films on the screen.

In 2011, Mehrjouyi made the movie “Che Khobe Ke Backir”. A film that still saw the strong footprints of Vahida Mohammadifar on it. Reza Attaran’s film was refreshing with a weird and sticky Hamed Behdad and a Mahnaz Afshar as always. Despite the presence of these 3 prominent actors, the film was unable to attract the audience. Only 237,000 viewers saw the movie, and Mehrjouyi’s movie was ranked 11th in the list of the most watched movies of the year. In a year when the cinema still did not have a good box office and the most watched movie of the year could not even have a million audience.

Dariush Mehrjoui, indifferent to the lack of acceptance by the audience, writers and critics of his works, made the film “Ghosts” in 2014, which was even more disappointing than his previous film. Mehrjouyi’s return to a play by Henrik Ibsen (after “A Doll’s House” for the film “Sara”) did not work this time and “Ghosts” was a complete failure. A film that, if it did not have the name of Mehrjouyi in the initial title, few people would have guessed that this film was made by one of the prominent directors of Iranian cinema. “Ghosts” attracted only 25,000 viewers in the general release, and in the year when “Shahr Moushha 2” once again revived the box office and had more than two million viewers, “Ghosts” was ranked 39th in the list of the most popular films of the year. took

“Laminor” and its margins

Dariush Mehrjoui stayed away from cinema for 6 years after “Ghosts” and returned to cinema once again with a story about music (after “Century”) and with the same mood. He made “Laminor” in 2018 and the film was not present at the 38th Fajr Film Festival by the decision of its producer.

Dariush Mehrjoui published a video in protest and criticism of the non-release of his film. This video was published by Mehdi Khorramdel (journalist and documentary maker) and in it Mehrjouyi strongly criticizes this decision and emphasizes the release of Nowruz and the start of the screening of his film on the 18th of Esfand.

In this protest video, Mehrjouyi says: “I protest! This is the ticket to the screening of my film “Laminor”! This is not milk, it is not meat that you can say is out of date! You showed me the butterfly. Why do you break your promise?

You are not a man! Be a man! You are banning all my videos! You lost one of my movies and threw it in the garbage! My Centauri film was taken in front of me for no purpose, should we work on a film for two or three years and then throw it out? who are you I’m a philosophy major from America’s biggest university, you’re judging my movie. who are you? What degree do you have? what did you do Behind the curtain, you pass judgments like ghosts.

I can’t take it anymore. I will come and sit with my assistants in the Ministry of Guidance. I will not let go until I get my right. Ministry of Ershad; Dear Minister! listen to me I can’t anymore. I want to fight Come on, kill me. This is my chest. Kill me and destroy me, but I will take my right.”

After these events and Mehrjouyi’s protest against this behavior, the Iranian Film Critics and Writers Association reacted to the behavior of Dariush Mehrjouyi in a statement and supported this veteran director.

In the end, with some margins, the screening license of “Laminor” was extended, and Reza Darmishian, the producer of this film, wrote on his Instagram page: “And finally, Mr. Mehrjouyi’s screening license of “Laminor” was extended.

Although they did not let “Laminor” be released on Nowruz, but with the support of all the artists, media activists and people whose hearts beat for art and authentic and popular artists, the license of “Laminor” was extended after many struggles and numerous revisions. We are ready to show in cinemas.”

On the other hand, Mehrjouyi, after the issuance of the screening license, said in another video, while thanking the people of the cinema and those who had supported him, “There was a misunderstanding that fortunately was resolved, they gave me wrong information and I was sad, and God Thank goodness it was resolved.”

What was Mehrjouyi’s last project?

Zindayad Dariush Mehrjoui was involved in the pre-production of the movie “Muna” for several years, a film that Niki Karimi and Hamed Behdad were supposed to go in front of the camera in their fourth and third collaboration with Mehrjoui.

Niki Karimi said in this regard: Recently, I had the chance to be with him for the rehearsal of the film we were going to work together called “Mona”, I could see how he still only cares about humans.

Niki Karimi had previously worked with Mehrjouyi in “Sara”, “Perry” and “Mix” and Hamed Behdad in the films “Naranja Posh” and “Che Khobe Ke Beresdi”.
