Story Summary

In the city of Verona, Italy, two noble families — the Montagues and the Capulets — have been locked in a bitter feud for generations. Amid this hostility, two young hearts, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, fall deeply in love.

At first, Romeo is infatuated with another girl, Rosaline, but when he sneaks into a masquerade ball hosted by the Capulets to see her, everything changes. The moment he sees Juliet, the two are struck by instant love — unaware that they belong to enemy families. When they learn the truth, they are devastated, yet they choose to remain together, even if it costs them their lives.

Romeo seeks help from Friar Lawrence, a wise and peace-loving priest who hopes their union will end the family feud. Reluctantly, he marries them in secret.

But fate intervenes cruelly. Soon after, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, becomes enraged at Romeo’s presence at the ball and challenges him.
