Lusiale City Stadium

Lusail City, Qatar, is one of the newly established cities in this country. Part of the 2022 Qatar World Cup is going to be held in Lusail. The construction project of this city was established in 2005, but due to the determination of the time of the World Cup, its construction speeded up in recent years. In this section, we will learn more about the beautiful city of Lucille.
The city of Lusail, Qatar, was first a small village located about 15 kilometers north of Doha, where the head of the Al Thani tribe lived. The well-known and famous point of this city is a high rocky hill which in the past was used by sailors to find land and this village.
The age of this village cannot be accurately estimated, but the construction date of some of its buildings goes back to 1901. As mentioned, in 2005, the city of Lusail Qatar started its construction activities. This city has facilities such as luxury stores, golf courses, residential areas, marinas, island resorts, man-made artificial islands, recreational facilities, etc. The city of Lusail Qatar has 19 districts and is supposed to accommodate 250 thousand people.

The largest and most important stadium in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup is Lucille National Stadium. The stadium that will host the final of the 22nd edition of the World Cup. The capacity of Lucille Stadium is now 80,000 people, and after the end of the Qatar World Cup, it will be reduced to 40 people, and in return, various facilities such as stores, cafes, medical clinics, and educational and training equipment will be added from the empty space created.

Inspired by the traditions of the region, Lucille Stadium was designed and executed by Foster & Partners architectural team. Inspired by the interaction of light and shadow, this team designed special complex motifs for the facade of the building, which are similar to the ancient art patterns of the Arab world and Islamic art. Similar motifs can be seen in bowls, dishes and works of art in Arab-speaking countries. The exterior of the stadium is designed and built like the old Arab tradition of making bowls, which brings to mind the old traditions of the local people.

 Al Wakrah Stadium

Al Wakrah city is the center of Al Wakrah municipality in Qatar. Al Wakrah is limited to the coast of the Persian Gulf from the east, and the capital of Qatar, Doha, is located in the north of this city. Before this, Al Wukra was a small fishing and pearl fishing village. Over the years, it has grown into a small town with a population of over 80,000 people and is currently the second largest city in Qatar.
The city of Al Wakrah will host three group D games and one group H game. These games will be held at Al-Janoob Stadium.
Al-Janoob Stadium, which was known as Al-Wakrah Stadium, was the second stadium to be prepared for Qatar World Cup after the renovation of Khalifa International Stadium. The stadium, which was built using neo-futurism and post-modern architectural elements, and its exterior is also inspired by traditional boats (longges) that Arabs used to catch pearls in the past. It is interesting to know that apart from holding football matches in Qatar’s Al-Janoob Stadium, there are other facilities in this complex, such as restaurants, shops, wedding halls, educational institutes, cycling and horse riding tracks!

As mentioned earlier, Zaha Hadid is the architect and designer of Al-Janoob Stadium in Qatar, and his team of architects has implemented this building inspired by the culture of the region and the wishes of the employers in such a way as to show the tradition of shipbuilding in the region. Because this stadium is located in the coastal city of Al-Wakrah, which is an important area for shipbuilding and marine industries. For this reason, the designers of this project have tried to design the building by combining cultural roots and minimal and abstract design, considering the weather conditions of the region and the needs of athletes and the requirements of an equipped stadium. In fact, the designers have implemented the work using post-modernist design and neo-futuristic design.

The outward slope and the conical shape of the building make the exterior reminiscent of the sails of wooden masted ships. These small ships are usually known by names such as dav or jet, which can be seen in the arches on the roof of the stadium.

Another eye-catching design in Al-Janoob Stadium is the glass ceiling and walls, which are reminiscent of Arabic calligraphy and motifs with their special folds. Also, the designers have used bronze covers to represent and pay tribute to Islamic art in different parts of the stadium.
